What is it about?

Blast furnace slag is used as a source material for producing binders through the process of alkali-activation. In this process, the glassy phase present in the slag dissolves in the alkaline environment leading to the formation of reaction products for a strength giving binder. In this study, the dissolution of slag in an alkaline solution is studied and its x-ray diffraction (XRD) intensity signature is established. This is used to establish an XRD-based procedure for estimating the degree of reaction in the alkali-activated slag.
