What is it about?

This laboratory based research study looks at the mechanical response of a natural clay tested under different controlled conditions. The aim is to asses how changes in the clay structure caused by geological processes or mechanical pressures affect how it behaves when it's compressed or sheared at different rates.

Why is it important?

This research study helps us better understand the mechanical behaviour of natural clays and their response under the impact of construction activities.

Perspectives

This type of research is to large extend fundamental and very time consuming. Hence, although it is difficult to get a large dataset, it is always a pleasure to be able to add to the existing database of knowledge, especially in relation to challenging soils which impacts both existing and future buildings and structures onshore and offshore.
