What is it about?

The incorporation of paving interlayers within the asphalt layers is proving to be a common practice. However, milling and recycling such asphalt layers with paving interlayers is not very common. This paper evaluates the millability and recyclability characteristics of asphalt with paving interlayers to be incorporated in pavement and geotechnical applications.

Why is it important?

The findings from this study show that the asphalt layers with and without paving interlayers can be milled and recycled efficiently in the pavement applications including the potential use as road base and surface courses. Such incorporation of recycled asphalt with paving interlayers support sustainable construction practices by reducing the requirement of raw materials required for the roadway construction. In addition, the construction and annual maintenance costs of the roadways are substantially reduced without compromising on their performance, thus saving millions of dollars.

Perspectives

There has been a lot of questions in the pavement geotechnics community related to the possibility of milling and recycling the asphalt layers that comprise paving interlayers. In this paper, we have made an attempt to answer those questions related to the millability and recyclability of asphalt layers with paving interlayer. In the future studies, we shall answer the same questions regarding asphalt layers comprising different paving interlayers.
