What is it about?

When the Apostle Paul uses the categories of "spirit" and "flesh" is he indebted to the same tradition as found in the Qumran composition called "4QInstruction"? This article argues against the dichotomy of "spirit" and "flesh" in 4QInstruction as the background to Paul's writings.

Why is it important?

This article overturns the consensus that 4QInstruction and Paul are using the categories of "spirit" and "flesh" similarly.

Perspectives

Not only am I assessing "spirit" and "flesh" in 4QInstruction, but also suggesting an alternative interpretation of 4QInstruction. Is 4QInstruction deterministic and dualistic? I argue that it is not and in recent publications I have strengthened the argument.
