What is it about?

We performed an anonymous survey with standardized instruments among 203 mothers of children with Down syndrome in Germany. With only moderate life satisfaction, several of them had feelings of being under pressure and being affected in everyday life. Their need for inner peace and generativity were of strongest relevance, while religious and existential needs scored much lower. Religious needs were strongly correlated with the feeling of having strength in faith and God.

Why is it important?

Little is known about spiritual needs of mothers of children with Down syndrome. They need more comprehensiv support.

Perspectives

These mothers do "wonderful jobs" for their children; nevertheless, it is important to perceive their feelings of stress and only moderate life satisfaction along with their inner, spiritual resources and to support them.
