What is it about?

It was demonstrated that salt concentration is a determining factor in OAHD process. Although some studies have shown that sonication can accelerate ohmic extraction process, ultrasound pre-treatment did not considerably affect OAHD process kinetic in this study. Our finding highlighted the importance of OAHD optimization to accelerate this extraction process.

Why is it important?

Essential oils have received a great attention in several fields such as cosmetic products, pharmaceutical and food industries. Traditional methods of essential oil distillation are time- and energy- consuming and therefore, some other distillation techniques such as ohmic-assisted extraction (OAHD) are emerged to overcome these drawbacks. More research is needed to fully explore advantages and disadvantages of OAHD and the effects of process parameters (including electrolyte concentration) and ultrasound pre-treatment on this novel distillation technology.

Perspectives

The effect of electrolyte concentration, as one of the effective process parameters as well as ultrasound pre-treatment on OAHD were investigated and the importance of OAHD process optimization was highlighted. However, evaluation of the effect of process parameters on OAHD kinetics is just one of the prerequisites for industrial application of OAHD and we hope this paper encourage more research on other effective parameters on OAHD and on scaling up of this emerging technology.
