What is it about?

Before delignification reactions start, the entire wood chip needs to be evenly impregnated with cooking chemicals so a homogeneous delignification is obtained. Improved impregnation can be achieved by using high alkali concentration to increase the rate of diffusion.

Why is it important?

An even impregnation prior to cooking will improve the pulp yield.

Perspectives

It was great to collaborate with Anders Reimann who developed the method to analyse the degradation acids formed when carbohydrates are subjected to the peeling reaction.
