What is it about?
From the literature, it has been observed that scanty works have been carried out on LM13 aluminium alloy reinforced with copper coated steel wires. Hence in this present work, copper coated steel wires (1–5 numbers) have been reinforced in LM13 aluminium alloy using squeeze casting process. Microstructure of castings has been examined to study the reinforcement of steel wires in aluminium alloy. Mechanical properties viz., hardness, tensile strength and ductility of composites have been analysed and reported. Dry sliding wear behaviour of LM13 aluminium alloy and composites have been tested by varying sliding distance up to 2500 m with a load range of 10–40 N. Fracture surface of tensile specimens and worn surface of samples have been investigated using FESEM. The main objective of this present work is to investigate the mechanical properties and dry sliding wear behaviour of squeeze cast LM13 aluminium alloy reinforced with varying number of copper coated steel wires.
