What is it about?

This study explores how entrepreneurial strategic posture—a firm’s proactive and risk-taking attitude—translates into international performance through the firm’s learning effort in foreign markets. It also examines how external competition and internal collaboration shape this process, providing a deeper understanding of how young international ventures thrive. Based on data from Chinese international ventures, the study finds that companies with a stronger entrepreneurial orientation perform better abroad because they invest more effort in learning from their international environments. This mediating effect of learning effort becomes even stronger in conditions of high competitive intensity and when social interaction among employees is high. Together, these factors create an environment where learning translates most effectively into superior international outcomes. For managers and entrepreneurs, the findings emphasize the importance of fostering both a strong learning culture and collaborative internal relationships to turn entrepreneurial ambition into performance. Firms operating in highly competitive settings, in particular, should invest in creating open channels for information sharing and cooperation among employees to amplify the benefits of entrepreneurial initiatives.

Why is it important?

This research is unique because it identifies international learning effort as a central behavioral mechanism linking an entrepreneurial mindset to success in foreign markets. By integrating internal (social interaction) and external (competitive intensity) factors, it provides a comprehensive view of how organizational attention and learning behaviors jointly shape global performance. Its timeliness lies in its focus on the rapidly expanding population of Chinese international new ventures, which operate in intensely dynamic environments. As firms from emerging economies continue to internationalize early, this study offers practical insight into how nurturing an entrepreneurial learning culture can turn ambition into sustainable international achievement.
