What is it about?

In this article, we present the concept of “active music listening”, considering that listening can be an engaging and important way for children to interact with music, using movement and their entire bodies, leading to music learning. We introduce active music listening as a part of the music class, discussing our way of locating listening exercises on a music lesson plan. Finally, we illustrate four ideas of active music listening exercises selected from our daily practices, with concluding remarks and implications for early childhood music education.

Why is it important?

In the article, we discuss "active music listening" as a strategy for working with music appreciation involving a completely active attitude of the listener, using his/her entire body, which is appropriate for music and movement activities on early childhood music education. We present important theories and concepts on the main theme, with practical examples.

Perspectives

This text summarizes the ways we have been conducting active music listening strategies for the last years, as we have noticed that the listening exercises show themselves as the most engaging part of the music classes. We intend to propose interesting resources to improve music classes for children.
