What is it about?
This is an Opinion Piece that the Editors of PLOS Water invited me to write. It contains my personal views aboiut issues that should be addressed at the UN 2023 Water Conference. The two issues that I decided to highlight are: offering water as a tool to help other people achieve their goals; and promoting water’s role in climate change mitigation. I am writing this short summary after having attended the UN Conference. The first issue was not much addressed, while I was pleasantly surprised that the second issue was mentioned more than at previous meetings.

Why is it important?
This was the first UN conference on water since 1977. So it was important to maximise its impact and benefit. This Opinion Piece was one small contribution to doing that.
Perspectives
Because my Opinion Piece was just one of many similar writings, I decided to keep my messages short and clear. I hoped to make a useful contribution to the debate. The impact of the conference (and of my own contribution to it) will not become clear for many years - I think the critical indicator will be the extent to which poliitcians and decision-makers become interested and active in water issues.
