What is it about?
Saprolegniales(Oomycota) are eukariotic aquatic microorganisms related to brown algae. We discovered most of them are saprotrophs, but some cause serious infections in fish, crayfish, and plants. This review brings together what's known about how these organisms evolved the ability to parasitize their hosts, how many species exist, how they infect and spread, and what still remains a mystery about their biology.

Why is it important?
Parasitic Saprolegniales cause major economic and ecological damage worldwide; from crayfish plague, which has devastated native European crayfish populations, to fish and plant diseases affecting aquaculture and agriculture. Despite their impact, basic questions about how and when parasitism evolved in this group remain unanswered. By synthesizing scattered findings into an accessible review, this work helps researchers from different fields understand what is known, what is still debated, and where future research should focus.
Perspectives
Writing this article as a review meant stepping back from the details of my own data to look at the bigger picture of an entire group of organisms. I wanted it to be genuinely readable by someone with no background in oomycetes. I hope it makes Saprolegniales a little less misterious and a little more fascinating.
