This review looks at what research says about social workers’ involvement in preventing hate and violent extremism. It explores the roles they play, the ideas guiding their work, their experiences and ethical challenges. It also identifies gaps and priorities for future research and practice.

Why is it important?
This protocol is timely because social workers are increasingly being asked to help prevent hate and violent extremism, yet little is known about how they can do this safely and effectively. It sets out a clear plan to identify what is known, where the gaps are and what guidance is needed for effective social work practice.
Perspectives
The authors are social workers with a decade of experience in preventing extremist violence. One worked on the front lines in Toronto, helping people disengage from extremist groups and beliefs. The other has international experience developing policies and programs to prevent and respond to extremist violence.
