What is it about?
University students frequently report elevated stress, yet formal mental health support is not always readily accessible. This study explored whether a self-directed mind-body practice—specifically the SKT1 technique, which focuses on controlled breathing and meditation—could potentially serve as a low-intensity resource for mood management. We monitored 27 university students who practiced SKT1 over a two-week period, analyzing over 700 real-time, within-person mood ratings taken immediately before and after their sessions. The data suggest a significant reduction in negative mood scores immediately following the practice within this specific sample.

Why is it important?
While many traditional mental health interventions require long-term commitment, these preliminary findings indicate the possibility that SKT1 can provide a "per-session" mood boost. Within the scope of this study, the immediate mood reductions appeared consistent across the 14 days and did not seem to be influenced by how strictly students adhered to the daily practice schedule. While further research with larger, diverse groups is needed to confirm generalizability, this study highlights SKT1 as a feasible, low-cost self-care option that universities might consider exploring to help students manage daily academic stress.
Perspectives
As educators and researchers, we are interested in finding practical, accessible tools to support student well-being. Our preliminary findings suggest that simple, self-directed breathing exercises like SKT1 may offer immediate emotional relief on a session-by-session basis. While these initial results are encouraging, they primarily reflect the experiences of our specific student sample, and we look forward to seeing how future research with larger control groups can further clarify the broader impact of this technique.
