What is it about?
This study explores how digital referral systems are used in Australian general practice, using chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) care as an example. Digital referrals can help clinicians share information, coordinate care, and improve patient access to specialist services. However, they do not always work smoothly in practice. The research examined clinicians’ experiences of what supports effective digital referrals and what creates challenges, including system usability, communication gaps, and difficulties integrating technology into routine workflows. While digital systems offer opportunities to improve care coordination, better system design, implementation support, and collaboration are needed to realise these benefits. The findings provide practical insights to help improve digital referral processes and support safer, more connected care for patients and healthcare professionals.

Why is it important?
This study is important because digital referrals are increasingly used to improve communication and coordination across healthcare, yet their implementation in everyday practice is not always well understood. By examining clinicians’ experiences in COPD care, this research identifies practical barriers and enablers that influence whether digital referral systems support efficient, connected care. The findings are timely because health systems continue to invest in digital models of care, but technology alone does not guarantee better outcomes. This study highlights where improvements in system design, workflow integration, and implementation support are needed. These insights may help inform policy, guide service improvement, and support more effective digital referral pathways for patients and clinicians.
Perspectives
Here is a concise personal perspective you could use: This publication is meaningful to me because it brings attention to the practical realities clinicians face when using digital systems in everyday care. While digital health is often discussed at a policy level, this study focuses on lived experiences and the challenges of implementation in practice. What I value most is that the findings do not only identify barriers, but also point to opportunities for improvement. I hope this work contributes to ongoing conversations about designing digital systems that better support clinicians, strengthen care coordination, and improve patient outcomes. I am especially grateful to the participants and my supervisory colleagues whose insights made this research possible.
