What is it about?

Parental depression during childhood is a common source of stress. Our study shows, for the first time, that people who remember both of their parents being depressed when they were young tend to have poorer memory later in life than those who do not recall parental depression.

Why is it important?

It shows that parental depression in childhood can have long-term effects on later-life memory.

Perspectives

Previous research has largely focused on the negative effects of maternal depression on children’s health. Our findings highlight the importance of considering paternal depression alongside maternal depression.
