What is it about?
A study of over 2,300 people in India found that a one-year program of diet, exercise, and stress management helped 31% achieve diabetes remission without medication. It shows who is most likely to achieve remission (defined as defined as maintaining HbA1c levels <48 mmol/mol (6.5%) for at least three months without glucose-lowering medications).

Why is it important?
This work is crucial and timely because it proves that type 2 diabetes can be reversed through lifestyle changes in a high-risk population like India. It provides a clear checklist for doctors and patients, showing that younger age, recent diagnosis, and significant weight loss are key predictors of success. This moves diabetes care beyond just managing the disease with drugs to potentially reversing it through dedicated, holistic programs.
Perspectives
From my perspective, this research is a powerful message in reversing diabetes. It shifts the narrative for millions living with type 2 diabetes from one of lifelong medication to one of potential recovery. It demonstrates that our bodies can heal significantly when given the right tools such as a personalized plant-based diet, physical activity, and stress management. The findings empower individuals to take a central role in their health and provide clinicians with a practical, evidence-based roadmap to guide their patients toward remission, fundamentally changing how we approach diabetes management.
