What is it about?
Microscopic sensors in our ears are needed for normal hearing. We describe how small size changes in parts of these sensors change how they work. These size changes explain measured differences owing to different experimental conditions used to study these sensors.

Why is it important?
This work implies that size changes of less than 1% in parts of the ear's sensors will cause hearing loss unless additional processes compensate for the size changes.
