What is it about?
This study examined how red and white blood cells from dromedary camels respond to increasingly hypotonic saline solutions. Blood from three healthy adult female camels was exposed to four NaCl concentrations and six incubation periods to determine how cell area changes and to identify conditions suitable for larger-scale phenotyping.

Why is it important?
Camels tolerate severe dehydration followed by rapid rehydration, so their blood cells must withstand substantial osmotic stress. Red blood cells remained intact while expanding markedly, and surviving white blood cells also enlarged substantially, showing that both cell types have unusual tolerance to hypotonic conditions. These measurable responses could support future studies of the genetic basis of camel adaptation.
Perspectives
This work was designed as a first step toward turning a well-known camel adaptation into a measurable phenotype. Establishing a repeatable blood-cell response under controlled osmotic conditions creates a basis for comparing larger numbers of camels and eventually linking variation in this trait to underlying genetic differences.
