What is it about?

It has been well known that the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorder of adult ADHD is close to 80%. In this paper, we compared the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders between adults with ADHD and those without ADHD, respectively, by dividing the group into a group with and without a previous diagnosis of mental illness.

Why is it important?

The prevalence of most psychiatric disorders, such as depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, and substance use disorder, was higher in the adult with ADHD group than in the without ADHD group, whether or not they had been previously diagnosed with another psychiatric disorder. Which indirectly suggests a complecated bio-psycho-social relation between ADHD and other psychiatric disorders.

Perspectives

A standardized test specific to adult ADHD is needed to distinguish between ADHD and comorbid psychiatric disorders and to accurately determine the prevalence. Additionally, ADHD diagnosis should be carefully considered in adults with multiple comorbid psychiatric conditions.
