Using Virtual Reality to Study Prejudice and Its Reduction: An Overview of Research

What is it about?

This review looks at how Virtual Reality (VR) is used to study prejudice. We examine how VR has been used to understand intergroup attitudes, bias, and prejudice, and whether VR interventions can effectively reduce prejudice. We also compare the advantages and limitations of using VR compared to traditional methods. We only included studies that used VR to interact with members of different groups or embody an outgroup member. The review of 64 studies shows that VR contact has the potential to improve intergroup relations, but there are cases where it can actually increase prejudice. We discuss these findings based on different perspectives and minority groups studied. We also analyze factors that may influence the outcomes. Finally, we address important theoretical and methodological issues related to using VR to reduce prejudice.
