What is it about?
We documented the lived experiences of people who recovered from COVID-19 infection in Edo State, Nigeria, using in-depth interviews. We examined their experiences under six main themes: how they complied with prevention measures, how they contracted the virus, the nature of the symptoms they experienced, disease management and their experiences with the health system, emotional experiences with friends and relatives, and recommendations on specific strategies to prevent and manage the virus based on their experiences.

Why is it important?
Documenting recovered people's experiences helps to provide information on the social context in which the virus was contracted, the nature of the disease's symptomatology and clinical features, treatment methods, and affected people's perceptions of the health care system's responsiveness to the virus. We think that the respondents' diverse experiences will be useful in strengthening health-system interventions and policies to combat the virus and similar pandemics in Nigeria and other low-resource settings.
Perspectives
This study was both fascinating and insightful. The results demonstrate that speaking with individuals who have direct experience with the disease is the best method to generate evidence for intervention during a pandemic.
