What is it about?

Rice is the staple food for majority of the worlds' population. Developing a high yielding and disease resistance or climate tolerant rice line which could cope with the developing population is time consuming and tedious work. Usually, development of a rice line takes 6-7 years of which majority of time (~5-6 years) is required only to stabilize the line i.e the line generated do not segregate and maintain its desired nature year after year. Homozygous lines are such plants which have two exact copies of the same gene in sister chromosomes. Doubled haploids are such lines which carries two exact copies of the haploid chromosomes obtained from the microspores (immature pollen) of the rice flower. Though, this technology is already present the utility is limited in the indica rice which is widely cultivated rice type. Publication highlights the general culture conditions along with the proper media composition required to achieve the douubled haploids (true homozygotes) in indica rice.

Why is it important?

it provides a universal non-biased method for doubled haploid production in rice. This will be usefull for all the researchers working in the improvement of rice.

Perspectives

This article is a combined effort of all the participants for the development and improvement of rice varieties. It will serve as the corner stone to various research works in rice.
