What is it about?

For a long time, it has been suggested that melanocyte progenitors reside in hair follicle only. But this manuscript reported that melanocyte progenitor cells reside not only in hair follicle, but also in human subcutaneous adipose tissue.

Why is it important?

We found new cell-recourse for melanocytes which can be harvested easily at high dose. Also, we expect that melanocytes and its progenitors migrate in dermis and reach to epidermis during the embryogenesis.

Perspectives

Melanocyte progenitors in adipose tissue will be usable to produce pigmented epidermis and hair follicles. These cells also can be used to treat depigmented skin diseases.
