What is it about?
The study is about an update of the type and prevalence of the oral lesions among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV). The lesions are opportunistic and thus may herald compliance to anti-retroviral treatment challenges.

Why is it important?
The lesions may be used to gauge whether the immune system is functioning optimally. Those adolescents who still have lesions, more education on compliance is important. In addition, oral hygiene should be enhanced to reduce dental decay, mouth infections and sores in the mouth.
Perspectives
The paper highlights the importance of streamlining adolescent youth health in polices such as the South African National Adolescent and Youth Policy, to include oral health care and promotion. Good oral health is necessary for general in many ways.
