What is it about?

It describes a new, rapid phenotypic test designed for diagnostic microbiology laboratories to detect and classify carbapenemase producing bacteria. These constitute a major antibiotic resistant infectious disease threat associated with high mortality. The test combines simple methodology with speed (74.1% of carbapenemases detected within 10 minutes), high accuracy, and carbapenemase classification capability. The classification capability is important for therapeutic and antibiotic stewardship purposes. This test can contribute to improving patient management, reducing mortality and containing the spread of carbapenemase producers.
