What is it about?
Altered lung function in lung disease is linked to higher risk of heart attacks but mechanisms responsible are not fully understood. We investigated the link between lung function and heart structure and function using heart MRI in a subset of people without lung and heart disease from the large UK population cohort (UK Biobank) study. We found changes with reduced lung function comparable with changes seen with aging.

Why is it important?
Lung disease is common and the link with heart health is important. Air pollution and smoking could be tackled to reduce the risk of lung disease which in turn may reduce the risk of heart attacks.
Perspectives
Future studies will need to investigate how these structural and functional heart changes observed in relation to lung function can impact on outcomes.
