What is it about?

This article discusses the effect of iron reducing bacteria on corrosion of carbon steel

Why is it important?

The main implication of this work is that partial heterogeneous coverage by Shewanella oneidensis biofilms can drastically accelerate the corrosion rate bare uncovered steel regions. We propose a mechanism in which the excess of electrons from microbial respiration drive the oxidation reaction on biofilm-free areas to maintain local charge neutrality.

Perspectives

In this article, we describe an elegant model that can explain the rapid localization of the corrosion attack due to heterogeneous s oneidensis MR-1 biofilm coverage.
