What is it about?

We found that the extent to which people use vision to control their posture predicts the strength of their illusions of self-motion (vection). Non-linear measures (based on chaos theory) were better predictors than linear measures: people whose sway was less complex experienced greater vection.

Why is it important?

This work has implications for flight simulation, virtual reality, and motion sickness: vection is an important factor in all of these things. Postural sway data is simple to collect, and can be used as a rich tool to explore the non-linearities of connections between different sensory systems.
