What is it about?
This study explores the experiences and practices of traditional healers (THs) in Malawi regarding snakebite treatment and prevention. 16 THs were interviewed, and five main themes emerged: knowledge of snakes and treatment, continuum of care, payment procedures, snakebite prevention, and relationship with health facilities. THs demonstrated considerable knowledge about snakes and their treatment, provided a comprehensive care package, and used a mix of herbs, plants, and a blend made from the head of a dead snake. The majority of THs used a ""pay-later"" model for their services, and there was a weak relationship between THs and healthcare facilities. THs claimed a high treatment success rate with no reported deaths, building trust within the community. The study highlights the importance of understanding and collaborating with THs to improve snakebite treatment and prevention in rural Malawi.

Why is it important?
The study is important because it sheds light on the role of traditional healers in the treatment and prevention of snakebites in rural Malawi. It highlights the knowledge, practices, and experiences of traditional healers, which can contribute to a better understanding of the local healthcare system and help improve snakebite management. Key Takeaways: 1. Traditional healers play an important role in the care of snakebite victims in Malawi. 2. THs have considerable knowledge about snakes and snakebites in their area, but their claims need scientific validation. 3. THs offer a comprehensive treatment package, including diagnosis, first aid, treatment, and follow-up care. 4. THs' relationship with health facilities is weak, which may hinder the effective management of snakebites. 5. A ""pay-later"" model of service delivery by THs has an impact on health-seeking behavior in the community. 6. Further research is needed to understand the phenomenon, underlying mechanisms, and potential implications for healthcare delivery and patient outcomes in rural Malawi.
