What is it about?

Neurodevelopmental disorders like autism, hyperactivity, learning disability and epilepsy need comprehensive multi-disciplinary interventions for management. Reliable prevalence data is needed to allocate resources appropriately. No country-wide data on these disorders was available from India.

Why is it important?

This was a multi-disciplinary community survey using a 2-stage diagnosis for 9 NDDs in children 2-9 year old. The prevalence found wad around 3-18% in 2-6 yr-olds for any of the 7 NDDs and 6-18% in 2-9 yr-olds for any of the 9 NDDs; around 0.4-4% and 0.5-5%, respectively of the children had more than one disorder.

Perspectives

: The study identifies NDDs in children aged 2-9 years as a significant public health burden for India. HI was higher than and ASD prevalence comparable to the published global literature. Most risk factors of NDDs were modifiable and amenable to public health interventions.
