What is it about?
Our study in Kenya identified key provider stressors including high workloads; lack of supplies, poor salary, attitudes of colleagues and superiors, attitudes of patients, and adverse outcomes. We showed how these stressors also impact patient outcomes negatively , as well as the ways providers cope with these stressors in their workplace. Our findings show the importance of addressing organizational, interpersonal, and individual level stressors to support staff retention, provide adequate resources and incentives for providers, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Why is it important?
Qualitative data is especially important to contextualize and show the nuances and ways in which providers deal with stress in their workplace. These data will be important to help design interventions to help providers cope with stress and improve their own mental health, so that they are able to provide better care to patients.
Perspectives
Qualitative research, including the voices of providers, are critical to capture and elevate- especially in resource-constrained environments where their jobs are more complex.
