What is it about?
It is about the emerging food-borne illness called listeriosis. It is mainly caused by listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium responsible for meningitis, septicemia, and abortion. Because of the physiological immunosuppression, pregnant women are at higher risk of acquiring human listeriosis.

Why is it important?
The emerging food-borne illness like human listeriosis would be higher in Africa due to poor food handling and processing practices as we have been evidenced by the 2017–2018 South African outbreak. However, pregnancy-associated listeriosis is not reported much. This could be due to underdiagnosis and underreporting, so we compiled available pieces of literature for more attention during pregnancy, and for better management of pregnancy-related events.
