What is it about?

Domestic horses are prey animals that have lived alongside humans for thousands of years. Although gray wolves are their natural predators, most horses living under human care today have likely never encountered one. Yet, they can still tell apart wolves from unfamiliar, harmless animals by sight alone, even without prior experience. In our experiments at The Ohio State University, horses watched short, silent video clips of unfamiliar animals. Each trial began with a 20-second clip of grazing wombats, a harmless marsupial. This was followed by two more 20-second clips of gray wolves: one showing wolves fighting and one showing wolves grooming each other. Half of the horses saw the fighting clip first, and the other half saw the grooming clip first. This allowed us to test whether the order of the wolf clips affected their responses. While the horses watched the videos, we recorded their heart rate using sensors and filmed their behavior. We looked for responses such as tail swishing, head bobbing, nostril flaring, and changes in ear and eye position. We also noted each horse's sex, age, temperament, and social status within the herd. The horses’ heart rates increased when they watched the wolf videos compared with their resting heart rates and their responses to the wombats. At the same time, they showed no obvious signs of fear or distress and remained still. They also did not react differently to wolves that were fighting or grooming. One possible explanation is that prey animals need to make rapid decisions, so simply recognizing a predator may be enough to trigger a strong internal alert response. Horses with higher social status showed a greater increase in heart rate than lower-ranking horses. Dominant individuals are often followed by lower-ranking animals during herd movements. Their higher physiological arousal may help them maintain a high level of alertness and detect potential threats before the rest of the herd. Male horses also showed a greater increase in heart rate than females, even though males and females had similar resting heart rates. This difference may reflect factors other than social status, because female horses can be just as dominant as males. Previous studies have shown that males do not always lead herd movements. Instead, they may stay at the back of the group and monitor the surroundings for potential threats. This position may be beneficial for males that later become stallions guarding a group of mares and their young. Younger horses showed more fear and nervousness when handled and were harder to separate from the herd than older horses. We also found an unexpected pattern in how the horses looked at the wolves. Viewing the wolves with the left eye alone was extremely rare. Left-eye viewing is often linked to rapid threat assessment by the right side of the brain. Instead, the horses used either binocular (two-eyed) viewing, which provides the sharpest vision and depth perception, or the right eye, which sends information mainly to the left side of the brain for sustained attention and more detailed inspection. In contrast, when they looked at the wombat—always shown first—they strongly preferred binocular viewing. This may reflect an initial exploration phase. When the video switched to wolves, that binocular preference disappeared as the horses divided their attention between binocular and right-eye inspection. Taken together, the horses showed no outward signs of fear or panic, yet their heart rates and gaze revealed that they were physiologically alert while carefully evaluating the wolf images.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that domestic horses can tell an unfamiliar natural predator from an unfamiliar non-predator using sight alone, without any sound or smell. Even though they have never encountered these predators, the horses became physiologically alert and shifted their visual attention to carefully inspect the predator images rather than showing obvious fear behaviors. This reveals a complex level of threat assessment that is often overlooked in prey species. Our results also highlight that a horse’s calm outward appearance may not reflect its internal state. Factors such as sex and social status, and whether horses are alone or with other horses can shape how strongly a horse reacts to potential threats. This has practical implications for horse welfare and safety, because horses may become internally alert in everyday situations, such as encountering a domestic dog on a trail or in a busy facility, even when they appear relaxed. Recognizing these internal responses can help handlers and riders anticipate sudden reactions and prevent harm to both horses and humans

Perspectives

I absolutely loved working with these majestic animals. They fascinate me with their intelligence, curiosity, and unexpected behaviors, and they continually make me a more humble researcher. Spending time with them also had a deeply calming effect on me. This project reminded me how much horses still have to teach us—about their perception, their instincts, and sometimes even about ourselves.
