What is it about?

One of the largest problems facing the world today is the morbidity and mortality caused by antibiotic resistance in bacterial infections. A major factor in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the irrational use of antibiotics. The objective of this study was to assess the prescribing pattern and cost of antibiotics in two major governmental hospitals in the West Bank of Palestine.

Why is it important?

To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies regarding antibiotic utilization and cost in hospitals are available in the West Bank. Overuse and misuse of these medications can lead to antibiotic resistance, more side effects in patients, and extra cost. Therefore, a follow-up study is required to look at current prescribing habits and then assess the financial impact and justification for this prescribing. For practitioners and policymakers, this might be helpful. Based on our findings, training and instructional programs could be created.
