What is it about?

This article discusses the challenge of finding suitable materials for fixing specimens during micro-CT examinations. The fixation materials used in micro-CT should not cause movement artifacts, over-radiation, or specimen damage. The researchers scanned, analyzed, and compared 19 different fixation materials, focusing on factors like radiodensity, porosity, and reversibility. They found that materials such as polyethylene air cushions, Micropor foam, and polyurethane foam are attractive alternatives to commonly used materials like styrofoam. They also explored the use of more radiopaque materials like paraffin wax granulate and epoxy resin. The study emphasizes the need for micro-CT laboratories to have a variety of fixation materials to achieve high-quality imaging results.

Why is it important?

In the micro-CT literature, many authors avoid going into detail about the fixation of their samples. Often this is only insufficiently described or even completely left out. We have therefore compared many different inexpensive fixation materials that laboratories can use.

Perspectives

This project was an important cornerstone for our laboratory. We place a lot of value on good image quality and were able to improve even further by producing this work.
