What is it about?

Pharmacotherapy has a positive impact on public health. However, these advantages have been accompanied by an increase in the risk of medical hazards and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). ADRs have continued to be a public health challenge with significant clinical and healthcare costs. However, little is known regarding the incidence of ADR in Ethiopia, particularly at the University of Gondar Comprehensive specialized hospital (UoGCSH). Thus, we assessed the incidence and patterns of ADRs in patients admitted to the UoGCSH.

Why is it important?

Investigation of the incidence and patterns of ADRs in terms of types of medications causing ADRs, types of ADRs, and their severity and systems affected using multifaceted methods including patient interviews, a review of medical records, and direct observation were conducted. This will provide more information and raise awareness for healthcare providers and patients. It will be an initial step in evaluating and improving pharmacovigilance in real-world practice and maintaining patient safety.

Perspectives

Medication errors that result in ADR can occur at any time of medication use, including prescription, dispensing, administration, and monitoring. Healthcare professionals pay closer attention and patients also must be extremely vigilant and motivated to recognize the ADR effects of their medications.
