What is it about?

We are interested in identifying the connections between intimate partner violence and health problems in older women. We are using electronic health records data to gather information for their study. Electronic Health Records are digital records of patient's medical information from healthcare visits.   By carefully analyzing and extracting valuable information from these electronic health records to understand how the violence affects the health of these women.

Why is it important?

Older women who experience physical and nonphysical abuse from their partner, such as physical aggression, being demeaned, being isolated, being excluded by their partner, or being financially exploited, report negative effects on their overall well-being. However, there is not much information available on how intimate partner abuse impacts the health of older women in particular. In this research paper, the authors intend to identify the health-related effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) that are commonly observed in older adult women. They want to gain a better understanding of the specific health problems that older women may face as a result of IPV.

Perspectives

In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the serious issue of intimate partner violence against older women. We are excited to bring together diverse expertise from the fields of medicine, mental health, and data science; with this interdisciplinary approach, we highlighted the need for a comprehensive understanding of IPV's impact on their health and well-being and the unique needs of this vulnerable population.
