What is it about?
The article is a systematic review of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for adult patients undergoing elective surgery. The study aimed to evaluate the transparency and methodological quality of published CPGs in the preoperative assessment and management of adult patients undergoing elective surgery. The researchers searched for eligible CPGs published in English or Spanish between January 1, 2010, and June 30, 2022, in various databases and medical societies. The CPGs dedicated to preoperative fasting, cardiac assessment for non-cardiac surgery, and the use of routine preoperative tests were included. The methodological quality and transparency of CPGs were assessed by three evaluators using the six domains of the AGREE-II tool. The study found that CPGs in the preoperative assessment or management of adult patients undergoing elective surgery present moderate to high methodological quality.

Why is it important?
This helps to ensure that the guidelines are based on the best available evidence and are developed using a rigorous and transparent process. The review also identifies areas where guidelines can be improved, such as in the domains of applicability and stakeholder involvement. Ultimately, the goal of the review is to provide clinicians with high-quality guidelines that can improve the quality of care and reduce the risk of complications for patients undergoing elective surgery.
