What is it about?
We created a universal theoretical modeling framework for pathogen transmission based on rigorous metapopulation theory in ecology.

Why is it important?
This patch dynamics modeling framework seamlessly integrates pathogen, host, and environment, the three most important components in epidemiological triad. It offers a unified framework to integrate both within-host infection and between-host transmission processes.
Perspectives
This is an innovative modeling framework to complement and significantly expand the century-old SEIR-type compartment epidemic models. The compartment models are a special case of the more universal patch dynamics model described in this paper.
