What is it about?

Coastal wetlands support a rich habitat and provide buffer from coastal storms. Resources allocated to protect them are usually limited, therefore requires prioritization for the best return on investment. We analyzed multiple factors that impact their condition and combined them to assign an overall score for vulnerability. Therefore, this helps identify which marshes are more vulnerable and what factors impact them the most. It also helps discover if there is any spatial trend of vulnerability versus resilience within a marsh complex.

Why is it important?

We developed a method for a comprehensive assessment of condition of coastal wetlands under multiple stressors, and applied it to explore spatial relations and trends of vulnerability and resilience.

Perspectives

A comprehensive analysis requires a multitude of inputs. We used field measurements, remote sensing, hydrodynamic modeling and geospatial analysis to establish this comprehensive method to assess the condition of coastal wetlands.
