We conducted a literature review with global scope to gather studies that compared the outcomes of integrated HIV healthcare models with vertical HIV services, which has been the status quo in many countries to date.

Why is it important?

HIV funding is declining in recent years. Hence, there is a pressing need to rethink, innovate and restructure HIV services in order to continue serving all people needing prevention, testing, treatment and care for HIV.

Perspectives

This is the first study to synthesise the global evidence on integration of HIV services. The study can provide guidance for countries on evaluating and optimising HIV services towards the ultimate goal of ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030.
