Mathematical models are increasingly used to perform virtual experiments on cellular systems. In this paper we discuss 10 crucial steps of the generic process to go from a basic understanding of the cellular system to a fully developed and analysed mathematical model.

The 10 steps provide an educational introduction into the world of mathematical models, which are exciting tools to test hypotheses and perform virtual experiments, many orders of magnitude faster than real experiments.
