What is it about?

Conventional lenses have a single focal length, the same on both sides of the lens. Here we develop the necessary mathematical tools to allow analysis of unconventional, more generalised, lenses where the focal length differs on each side of the lens. Additionally we show what such devices could do with the help of a raytracing simulation.

Why is it important?

Approximations of generalised lenses have been around for many decades, dating at least to the Gabor Superlens of 1940. To the best of our knowledge there has not been a complete examination of the properties of these devices, and as such here we help to flesh out a complete understanding of an interesting segment of Geometric Optics.

Perspectives

This is a nice paper not least of all because of the involvement of our project students, Gavin, Gregory and Jakub. Indeed Jakub has now joined us as a PhD student! It was great to work with them and to get to such a nice, and I think complete, result.
