What is it about?

Osteoporosis is caused by a reduction of bone density, and is often a hidden issue until a fall happens and a fracture occurs. This short editorial explains what it is and how care staff can help residents to minimise issues arising from it.

Why is it important?

One of the first signs of osteoporosis is a fracture following a fall from a standing height. Early identification can help reduce the risks of a fall and its consequences.

Perspectives

Several elderly members of my family have had osteoporosis, which led to fractures following minor falls. One of the clinical signs is a fall on an outstretched arm causing a fall to people in their 50s. Treatment can help reduce the bones fragility, and external risks can be reduced to prevent falling in care homes.
