Why is it important?

The management of medicines in care homes is critical to the safety and well-being of residents. Especially as many residents cannot communicate their wishes easily, and many have multiple health conditions. Residents, staff and relatives are asking for better basic information & knowledge about medicines, including more 'on the job' learning on how to to communicate this effectively with clinical staff and G.P.s.

Perspectives

When I've visited care homes to carry out reviews etc. I've learned a great deal from working directly with care home staff, many of whom are not registered processionals. I've been struck by the enthusiasm of staff, at all levels, to learn how to deliver the best care. We need to invest more in our people.
