What is it about?

Burnout is an increasingly common phenomenon in today's society. Veterinary surgeons are overrepresented due to multiple factors which are discussed in a previously linked article. Understanding why a problem exists is important but learning how to resolve these issues is critical and, that is the purpose of this paper.

Why is it important?

Occupations which require people to invest substantial amounts of emotional energy to undertake them are critical for society. This phenomenon was highlighted during the multiple 'lockdowns' during the COVID 19 pandemic where members of these professions continued their work, placing themselves at risk on behalf of others. Frequently people in these professions have higher incidences of suicide and shortened careers despite the years of study required to become qualified. Understanding how to build businesses and structures to help reverse these trends is critical for all involved.
