What is it about?
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a life-threatening neuro-psychiatric emergency that is rarely seen by paramedics in the out of hospital setting. Despite the majority of paramedics having never seen a patient with this condition, it is important that paramedics are aware of this condition and have the knowledge and skills to identify this condition.

Why is it important?
This paper is unique in that it considers the identification and paramedic management of neuroleptic malignant syndrome. This topic has not previously been discussed in a paramedic context.
Perspectives
This is an important area for paramedics to be aware of, despite the low incidence rates of this condition. Being cognisant of this as a potential diagnosis can prompt life saving treatment for the patient upon presentation to the ED.
