Why is it important?

Speech, language and communication skills are a critical factor in a child's development. There a links between speech, language and communication development and social disadvantage and outcomes in later life. Health visitors and family nurses are well placed to develop effective and therapeutic relationships with families, and to support and empower them to promote optimum speech, language and communication development in their children.

Perspectives

In writing this article it important to acknowledge the expertise and contributions of colleagues who were part of the team that developed the speech, language and communication resource and consisted of colleagues from health visiting, family nursing, psychology and speech and language therapy. It was a pleasure to work with them all.
