What is it about?
The use of sensory approaches is an emerging evidence based practice in mental health. The are however very limited guidance on how to implement sensory approaches in mental health. This paper provides a detailed description of how an experienced group of professionals did it in an Australian health service. The authors reflect on what works and some of the challenges.

Why is it important?
We discuss the challenges as well as what works well when implementing sensory approaches. This is important to any individual or service that wants to implement sensory approaches successfully in mental health.
Perspectives
It is important that any clinician or health service that is considering implementing sensory approaches is aware of the pit falls so that they can mitigate these. The goal is to ensure that the implementation is successful. When successfully implemented there is growing evidence that demonstrates that sensory modulation is very effective in mental health settings. Sensory modulation interventions reduce distress and can reduce the need for seclusion. It is a recovery oriented approach that is receiving growing attention from mental health clinicians and services.
